PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Department of Health is advising consumers that Stop & Shop is recalling its store brand frozen broccoli florets because a sample tested positive at a store in South Windsor, Conn., for the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant women, and others with weakened immune systems. The infection can also cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and fetal infection in pregnant women, health officials said.
People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention, and customers can return it for a refund, officials said. The recall is for 16 ounce bags of Private Brands Frozen Broccoli Cuts.
