Town will strictly enforce Westerly parking ban

WESTERLY — A parking ban is set to go into effect at midnight and will be in force until further notice.

Because of the large volume of snow anticipated to hit the region, Town Manager Derrik M. Kennedy said the ban will be strictly enforced, meaning vehicles will be towed.

Public Works crews were due to mobilize at midnight to begin pretreating roads with salt and sand. Once the snow starts, the crews will convert to plowing.

Town Hall, municipal offices and the transfer station will be closed Tuesday, as will the town’s schools.

Kennedy is also reminding property owners of the town’s sidewalk-clearing ordinance, which requires clearance of snow and ice from sidewalks in certain zones no later than 24 hours following the end of a storm.

The ordinance applies to commercial areas designated as business zones for zoning purposes; any area that is within a one-half-mile radius of any public or private elementary school; and any area that is within a one-mile radius of any public or private secondary school. Violations can result in the issuance of a $50 fine for every 24-hour period sidewalks remain uncleared.

An announcement on the official end of the storm will be posted on the town website and its social media pages, Kennedy said.
