Boys indoor track: Stonington’s Whalen places 4th at State Open in 55 hurdles, qualifies for New Englands



NEW HAVEN — Stonington High’s Cam Whalen raced to a fourth-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles at the CIAC State Open track and field championships Saturday at the Floyd Athletic Center.

Whalen, a senior, finished in a time of 7.73 seconds. Hillhouse’s Deshaun Poole won the event in 7.53.

Whalen, by virtue of his top-six finish, qualified for the New England championships on March 3 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The Bears finished tied for 25th as a team with six points. Danbury (44 points) won the title.

Stonington’s 1,600 sprint medley relay team also scored at the meet, finishing fifth. Benjamin Abely, Graham Johnstone, Blake Edwards and Rhys Hammond combined for a time of 3.43.92.

The 1,600 SMR is not contested at the New England meet.
