Girls basketball: Stonington falls to state No. 1 New London in ECC semis

NORWICH — New London pulled away with a dominant third quarter and defeated Stonington High, 63-33, in the semifinals of the ECC girls basketball tournament Saturday at NFA.

The Whalers, ranked No. 1 in the GameTimeCT/New Haven Register Top 10 state poll, improved to 22-0 this season. They will face NFA in the finals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Plainfield. NFA beat Bacon Academy, 39-24, on Saturday.

Stonington (15-6) led 13-11 after the first quarter and trailed 29-19 at halftime. But New London outscored the Bears 21-1 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Kate Johnson scored nine points for Stonington. Aliza Bell added eight points and eight rebounds, and Miranda Arruda had six rebounds and four steals.

Rosalee Nicholson led the Whalers with 15 points.

The Bears next await pairings for the Class M tournament.
