WOONSOCKET — Freshman guard Spencer Shiels had 16 points, four assists and two steals to lead Chariho High over Woonsocket, 71-45, in a Division II-South girls basketball game Monday.

The Chargers (14-7, 12-5 Division II) led 37-20 at halftime and controlled the game throughout. Chariho coach Tom Gilligan said his team’s speed and 1-2-2 zone defense gave the Villa Novans (4-17, 2-16) problems.

“We get up and down the court very quickly,” he said, “and they had no answer for that.”

Kate Powers added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Sydney Davis had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

Chariho, currently ranked 18th in the state tournament power rankings (the top 16 qualify), hosts Middletown on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
