EAST PROVIDENCE — Westerly High took care of the basketball, turned up its defense and turned back East Providence, 41-37, in a Division II crossover girls game Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (14-9, 13-5 Division II) led 25-22 at halftime, and limited the Townies (15-6, 14-4) to 15 points in the second half.
“Out team defense, everybody was working together,” Westerly coach Sue Haik said. “We kept attacking, and we didn’t want to give them extra possessions. We only had nine turnovers, and with a team that can score like East Providence, you can’t give them extra possesssions.
“It was a total team effort.”
Megan Albamonti led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Isis Hamelin added 10 points and seven rebounds, Victoria Carreiro had eight rebounds and five assists, and Alexa Beal had nine boards.
Courtney Dorr scored 16 points for EP, which has lost three of its last four games.
Westerly will next host a Division II tournament game on Friday against an opponent and at a time to be determined.
